Booking choice: The Giza pyramids QR ticket, ★ 4.7 (670). Check dates Compare the options below
The way you visit Giza changed in 2025. Cars and coaches no longer drive around the plateau: everyone arrives at a new visitor centre and moves between the sights on electric shuttle buses. For independent travellers that is good news, because the hardest part of a visit on your own, getting from one pyramid to the next in the heat, is now done for you.
This guide takes you step by step from your hotel to the Sphinx exit, explains how the tickets are structured, what you miss without a guide and how to add the Grand Egyptian Museum. If you are still deciding when to go, start with the best time to visit.
The quick answer
Getting there: Uber or taxi to the visitor centre on the Fayoum road, about 30 to 60 minutes from central Cairo; there is no metro to the pyramids yet. Tickets: book on the Ministry's official ticket website and show the QR code, or pay by card at the office (no cash for tickets). Inside: electric shuttle buses, included with entry, loop between the Panorama, the three pyramids and the Sphinx. Time: about 3 to 4 hours, plus about an hour inside the Great Pyramid. Exit: the gate beside the Sphinx; your ticket is for one entry. Extras: each pyramid interior needs its own ticket, and the Grand Egyptian Museum, about 2 km away, needs a separate timed ticket. Bring a card, small cash for tips, water and a screenshot of your ticket.
Can you visit the pyramids without a tour?
Yes. A guide is not required: you buy the plateau ticket online or by card at the visitor centre, then use the shuttle buses between the stops. Tours mainly add hotel transport, history on site and easy access to Saqqara and Dahshur.
The table follows a typical visit on your own, from the car to the exit.
| Step | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Get there | Uber or taxi to the visitor centre on the Fayoum road | Name the new visitor centre, not the Mena House gate |
| 2. Ticket | Show your QR ticket or buy one by card at the office | Save a screenshot: phone signal at the entrance can be weak |
| 3. Interiors | Buy any pyramid interior ticket at the same time | Great Pyramid tickets are limited each day |
| 4. Panorama | Take the shuttle to the Panorama viewpoint first | The classic photo of the pyramids in a row |
| 5. The pyramids | Hop off at Menkaure, Khufu and Khafre | Walk around the base; going inside needs its own ticket |
| 6. The Sphinx | End at the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre | Both are covered by your plateau ticket |
| 7. Leave | Exit by the gate beside the Sphinx | Your ticket is for one entry, so see everything first |

Take an Uber or a taxi to the visitor centre on the Fayoum road, on the south side of the plateau. From central Cairo it is about 15 km and takes 30 to 60 minutes, longer at rush hour.
Since a pilot began in April 2025, the visitor centre has replaced the old entrance by the Mena House hotel as the main way in, so make sure your driver is heading there. Cars and coaches stop in its large car park; from that point everyone uses the shuttle buses or walks. There is no metro to the pyramids yet: Line 4, with a Pyramids station, is under construction.
If you are staying in Giza, the ride is much shorter, which is one reason many visitors spend a night near the plateau. The pros and cons are in where to stay, Cairo or Giza.
How do the shuttle buses inside the site work?
Electric shuttle buses run a hop-on, hop-off loop from the visitor centre to the Panorama viewpoint, the three pyramids and the Sphinx, and they are included with your entry ticket. You can get off, walk around and catch the next one.
- The order: the loop runs from the visitor centre to the Panorama, then the Menkaure, Khufu and Khafre stops, and ends at the Sphinx.
- How often: the buses ran about every 5 minutes when the system opened; queues build when the coach groups arrive mid-morning.
- Walking: you can walk between the pyramids too, but the distances are bigger than they look and there is little shade.
- One entry: your ticket is for one entry, so if you leave the plateau you would need a new one. See everything in one visit.
- The exit: finish at the Sphinx and leave by the gate beside it, then take a car from there.

How much does it cost to see the pyramids?
One general plateau ticket covers the outside of the three pyramids, the Sphinx and the Panorama viewpoint. Each pyramid interior is an extra ticket, and the Great Pyramid's is the most expensive single ticket on the plateau.
- The plateau ticket: your base cost, including the shuttle buses.
- Interiors: Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure each need their own ticket, and so do the decorated Tomb of Meresankh III and the Workers' Cemetery.
- Students: a valid student card gets a reduced rate. Egyptian citizens pay a lower local rate.
- Paid separately: the Grand Egyptian Museum, the evening Sound and Light show, camel and horse rides, guides and the restaurants on the plateau.
- How to pay: ticket offices take bank cards, not cash, so carry a card and keep small cash for tips, drinks and toilets.
Current figures are on the Ministry's Giza page. A private tour costs more than a shared one, and visiting on your own costs least of all.
How long does it take to visit the pyramids?
Most visitors spend around half a day: about 3 to 4 hours for the Panorama, the three pyramids and the Sphinx with the shuttle buses, plus about an hour if you go inside the Great Pyramid.
Arrive early. The plateau opens at 7 or 8 am depending on the season and last entry is around 4 pm, shorter in Ramadan. One reviewer of the QR entry ticket arrived at 4 pm and was hurried along by staff at closing time, while another found the workmen's village closed on the day. An early start gives you cooler air, a better chance of an interior ticket and time to stay at the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, where the square red granite pillars are easy to miss on a rushed visit.
If you would rather someone else watched the clock, the Half-Day Pyramids and Sphinx Tour (4.6 from 3,900 reviews) takes 5 to 6 hours with hotel pickup and an Egyptologist; one reviewer started at the Sphinx gate, walked up to the pyramids and ended at the Panorama.

Hotel pickup and an Egyptologist for the three pyramids, the Panorama and the Sphinx, back in time for lunch.

Mostly the stories and the logistics: who built what, why Khafre looks taller, what the Valley Temple was for, and someone to handle transport and tickets. The sights themselves are all open to you.
Giza has very few signs, so on your own the pyramids can feel like three impressive shapes rather than a royal cemetery with temples, causeways and workers' tombs. A good Egyptologist fills that in: that the pyramids were built around 4,500 years ago by crews of skilled Egyptian workers and seasonal labourers who lived in a town beside the site, or that the Sphinx is usually attributed to Khafre. A guide also keeps sellers at a distance simply by being with you.
Be honest with yourself about "skip the line": at Giza there is no fast lane for tour groups. A guide saves you time by buying tickets for you; a ticket booked online gives you the same advantage. If you want the history without a group, the Private Pyramids Tour with Camel Ride is the most reviewed tour on GetYourGuide for Giza, with guides praised by name.

Four hours with your own Egyptologist and air-conditioned car from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, the pyramids area ticket included and a short camel ride. Rated 4.9 from 7,825 reviews.

Sellers can be persistent, but a polite, firm "no, thank you" and walking on is enough. Buy tickets only at the official office or website, and agree any ride price in full before you start.
- Gifts: if someone hands you a scarf or souvenir as a gift, hand it back with a smile; it usually comes with a request for money.
- "Closed" stories: if a stranger tells you an area is closed and offers another way in, check with the official staff instead.
- Rides: camel and horse rides are now limited to designated areas away from the main paths. If you choose one, agree the route, the duration and the total price for everyone before you get on.
- Small cash: keep small notes for genuine tips, toilets and drinks.
More on dress, toilets and etiquette is in the pyramids dress code and tips.

Can you add the Grand Egyptian Museum on the same day?
Yes. The museum is about 2 km from the pyramids and needs its own timed ticket, booked on its official website. Do the plateau in the cool morning and the museum in the afternoon.
The Grand Egyptian Museum opened fully on 1 November 2025 and shows Tutankhamun's complete tomb collection for the first time, along with Khufu's boat, which used to stand beside the Great Pyramid. The galleries are open from 9 am to 6 pm, and until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry an hour before closing. A landscaped walkway has been built to link the museum with the pyramids; a short taxi ride also works.
Book on the museum's official ticket site or with the Grand Egyptian Museum Entry Ticket (4.8 from 3,366 reviews), which covers the main galleries, the Tutankhamun galleries and the Khufu boat museum. It is non-refundable, so fix your date first. Reviewers spent 3.5 hours and said it "did not do it justice", so keep the whole afternoon.

A one-day ticket to the Grand Egyptian Museum: the main galleries, Tutankhamun's complete collection and the Khufu boat museum. Non-refundable, so book once your date is fixed.

Do you need a guide to visit the pyramids?
No. Independent visitors buy the plateau ticket online or by card at the visitor centre and use the shuttle buses between the stops. A guide adds history, transport and help with tickets.

Not for tickets. The ticket offices have taken bank cards only since 2023, and you can also book on the Ministry's official ticket website. Keep small cash for tips and drinks.
Where is the entrance to the Giza pyramids now?
The main entrance is the visitor centre on the Fayoum road, on the south side of the plateau. The old entrance by the Mena House hotel is no longer the main way in. You can leave by the gate beside the Sphinx.
Are the shuttle buses at the pyramids included?
Yes, the electric shuttle buses that loop between the Panorama, the three pyramids and the Sphinx are included with your entry ticket.
