Greater Cairo is huge, and where you sleep decides how much of your trip you spend in traffic. The pyramids stand on the western edge of the city, in Giza, while most of Cairo's other sights lie across the Nile in the centre and the historic quarters to the east.
This guide compares the main areas, explains how to get from each airport and from the city to the pyramids, and shows why a night in Giza beats a very long day trip from the Red Sea. For the visit itself, see the pyramids without a tour and the best time to visit.
The quick answer
For two or three days focused on the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, stay in Giza: pyramid-view rooftops, the museum about 2 km away and early starts. For a longer stay with the old Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili, stay in Downtown, Zamalek or Garden City, about 15 to 20 km and 30 to 60 minutes from the pyramids. Arriving by air, Sphinx International Airport west of Giza is the closest; Cairo International Airport, east of the city, is about 45 to 75 minutes from Giza by road. There is no metro to the pyramids yet, so use Uber, a taxi or a tour with hotel pickup, and ask for the visitor centre on the Fayoum road. From Hurghada a day trip takes 15 to 20 hours, so a night in Giza is far more relaxed.
Is it better to stay in Cairo or Giza?
Stay in Giza if your trip is mainly about the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum; stay in central Cairo if you also want the old Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili. The two are about 15 to 20 km apart.
Neither choice is wrong. The question is which half of the city you will spend more time in. Giza wins for early starts and views; the centre wins for evenings, food and the rest of Cairo's history. With three nights or more, splitting your stay saves you the most time in traffic.
| Area | Feel | Good for | To the pyramids |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giza, near the pyramids | Busy streets, low rooftops, pyramid views from many terraces | Opening time at the plateau, sunrise rides, the Sound and Light show | A short drive to the visitor centre |
| Giza, near the Grand Egyptian Museum | Around the museum, on the edge of the plateau | Long museum visits, including late opening on Wednesdays and Saturdays | A short drive; the museum is about 2 km from the pyramids |
| Downtown | Lively, crowded, grand old buildings around Tahrir Square | The old Egyptian Museum, cafes, getting around the city | About 15 km, 30 to 60 minutes |
| Zamalek | An island in the Nile with quieter streets and restaurants | Evenings out, Nile views, a calmer base in the centre | 30 to 60 minutes, longer at rush hour |
| Garden City | Quiet streets by the Nile, next to Downtown | Walking to Tahrir, a felucca at sunset | 30 to 60 minutes, longer at rush hour |

You wake up to the pyramids above the rooftops and reach the plateau at opening time, before the coach groups. The trade-off is a busy, ordinary neighbourhood and a longer drive to the rest of Cairo.
The plateau opens at 7 or 8 am depending on the season, with last entry around 4 pm, and large groups usually arrive mid-morning, so the first hour after opening is the quietest. From a Giza hotel you can be there for it without a dawn drive across the city. Sunrise camel and horse rides start from stables outside the plateau, and the evening Sound and Light show runs at the Sphinx, both easy from this side of town.
The views are the reason to choose a hotel here, so check photos taken from the room or terrace itself. Since April 2025 the main entrance has been the visitor centre on the Fayoum road, on the south side of the plateau, not the old gate by the Mena House hotel, so a hotel that looks close on the map may still need a short taxi ride to the way in. The day itself is planned in the guide to visiting without a tour.
Why stay close to the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Because it deserves a long visit, ideally on a separate half day. It opened fully on 1 November 2025, about 2 km from the pyramids, and stays open late on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The museum holds more than 100,000 artefacts. For the first time, all 5,398 objects from Tutankhamun's tomb are shown together, and Khufu's boat, which used to stand beside the Great Pyramid, now has its own hall, where restorers are also rebuilding his second boat in front of visitors. Reviewers of the Grand Egyptian Museum entry ticket spent three and a half hours and felt it did not do the museum justice. That ticket cannot be refunded, so fix your date first; the museum's own timed tickets are sold on the official museum website.
Staying in Giza lets you split the two sites across a day and a half: the pyramids in the cool of the morning, the museum in the afternoon or on a late evening, when the galleries stay open until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Seven hours with an Egyptologist: the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple in the morning, lunch at a local restaurant, then the Grand Egyptian Museum. Both entry tickets are included; the Great Pyramid interior is an option.
Explore the pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum tourWhat does central Cairo have that Giza does not?
The old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the mosques and lanes of Islamic Cairo, the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and the Nile at sunset. If those matter to you, a base in the centre saves you a long drive every evening.
Downtown is the busiest and most central, with grand old buildings around Tahrir Square. Zamalek, an island in the Nile, is calmer and good for dinners out, and Garden City sits quietly by the river next to Downtown. From all three, a felucca ride on the Nile at golden hour is a short walk or ride away, and the historic quarters to the east are much closer than they are from Giza.
Mosques in Cairo ask visitors to cover their arms and legs, and women to cover their hair, so carry a scarf, as the dress code and tips guide explains. If you want both halves of the city in one day, the Female-Guided Pyramids and Museum Day (4.8 from 1,724 reviews) covers the pyramids, the old Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum by option, lunch and Khan el-Khalili in eight hours.

A female Egyptologist for the pyramids, a museum of your choice, lunch and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, with pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza.

About 15 to 20 km from the centre, 30 to 60 minutes by car and longer at rush hour. There is no metro to the pyramids yet, so take an Uber, a taxi or a tour with hotel pickup.
Uber and taxis reach the visitor centre on the Fayoum road, the main entrance since April 2025. Cars and coaches stop there; inside, electric shuttle buses included with your entry ticket link the Panorama viewpoint, the three pyramids and the Sphinx, and you can leave by the gate beside the Sphinx. Some drivers still head for the old entrance by the Mena House hotel, so name the visitor centre when you set off.
Cairo Metro Line 4 will have a Pyramids station and a stop at the Grand Egyptian Museum, and its tunnel reached the Pyramids station in April 2026, but the first phase is scheduled to open in 2028. Until then, the simplest option is a tour that collects you: the Private Pyramids Tour with Camel Ride picks you up anywhere in Cairo or Giza with your own Egyptologist and car.

Hotel pickup anywhere in Cairo or Giza, a private Egyptologist and an air-conditioned car, entry to the pyramids area and a camel ride of 10 or 30 minutes, rated 4.9 from 7,825 reviews.
Explore the private pyramids tour with a camel rideWhich airport is closest to the pyramids?
Sphinx International Airport, west of Giza, is the closest. Cairo International Airport, where most flights land, is east of the city, about 40 to 50 km and 45 to 75 minutes from Giza by road.
Sphinx International Airport is a smaller airport on the Cairo to Alexandria desert road. It received its first international flight on 1 January 2020 and is being expanded in connection with the Grand Egyptian Museum. In 2026 its routes include easyJet flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle since 2 September, with Manchester planned from 9 November and Naples from 2 December, and there have been scheduled flights from Sharm El Sheikh since November 2022. If your airline flies there, it is the easiest way to arrive for a stay in Giza.
From Cairo International, allow 45 to 75 minutes to Giza, longer at rush hour, and less to the centre. Book a transfer through your hotel or use a ride app, and if you land late, a first night near the airport or in the centre followed by a move to Giza is perfectly reasonable.
Can you visit the pyramids from Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh?
Yes, but it is a long day. From Hurghada a day trip by road takes 15 to 20 hours, about 5 to 6 hours each way; from Sharm El Sheikh, most day trips fly to Cairo.
The Cairo and Giza Day Trip from Hurghada (4.6 from 7,200 reviews) is the most popular way to do it: hotel pickup in Hurghada by minivan or bus, a small group, an Egyptologist, a barbecue lunch and general admission to the pyramids area. Options add the Great Pyramid interior, the Grand Egyptian Museum or a Nile boat, and a camel ride is an add-on. Pickups from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Safaga and Soma Bay cost extra. Day trips leave around 5 am, and one reviewer summed it up as a long journey, but well looked after.
Expect to spend more of the day on the road than at the pyramids. If your holiday allows it, flying to Cairo or Sphinx International Airport and staying a night changes the trip completely.
From your Red Sea hotel to the pyramids and back in one day, with an Egyptologist, a barbecue lunch and pyramids-area entry included, rated 4.6 from 7,200 reviews.
Check dates for the day trip from HurghadaWhy is one night in Giza better than a 20-hour day?
Because you see the pyramids at their best, at opening time or in the late afternoon light, and you have time for the Grand Egyptian Museum, without spending ten hours or more on the road.
- Afternoon: arrive in Giza, check in and watch the pyramids from a rooftop at sunset.
- Evening: the Grand Egyptian Museum on a Wednesday or Saturday, when its galleries stay open until 9 pm, or the Sound and Light show at the Sphinx.
- Next morning: the plateau at opening time, before the coach groups arrive mid-morning, with an hour inside the Great Pyramid if you want it.
- Midday: lunch, then head back to the Red Sea or on to Cairo.
A one-night stay also gives you a choice of tours: a sunrise ride, a private morning with an Egyptologist, or a day south to Saqqara and Dahshur, described in the pyramids beyond Giza. The best months and hours are in the guide to timing your visit.
